THE INGREDIENTS

1 c. milk
1/4 c. warm water (105-115°F)
2 pkg. active dry yeast
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. butter, softened
4 eggs
1 egg yolk
4 1/2 c. unsifted flour
1/2 c. raisins, soak overnight in rum
1/2 c. ground nuts, mixed in dough

TOPPING:

1 egg white
1 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. flour
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. butter

1 tsp. pure vanilla
1 tbsp. freshly grated orange zest (or a few drops of pure orange oil)

3 tiny drops anise oil
1 tsp. salt
4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup honey or agave nectar
2 large eggs, well beaten
1 egg yolk (reserve the white for egg wash for top)
hard boiled eggs dyed red (1 for each person)
